The 2008 Summer Arts Institute Filmmaking Workshop students recently completed 5 short films (and 18 one-minute individual pieces) about the city they live in and the individual neighborhoods that make New York the diverse, idiosyncratic city that it is. Exploring the culture, transportation, food, music and landscape of New York City—here are their Five Stories.

An experimental look at how old and new architecture comes together on Saint Marks Place and Astor Place in the East Village.; Ana has just moved to Jackson Heights from South America and lost her first job. Discouraged and uneasy in the whirl of different cultures, she comes to realize that she is not alone in her immigrant experience.; Cupcakes and Herring looks at how two very different food establishments made their homes on the Lower East Side, and in the process defined the neighborhood.; A Bensonhurst pizza delivery boy encounters a series of unforeseen obstacles along his usual route.; One day, the music disappears from Brighton Beach. When one man realizes how important these sounds are to his neighborhood, he takes up the cello to bring it back.;
