Four Short Films

APRIL 29, 6PM @ BMCC TRIBECA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (199 CHAMBERS STREET)

Join us for the world premiere of four short films created by students from the Bronx Preparatory Charter School. As part of the Tribeca Teaches program, 88 middle school students spent 10 weeks conceiving of and filming their own short documentary films, with the support of professional filmmakers. Each of these four films explore the lives, experiences and perspectives of young people in the South Bronx. Screening preceded by a Tribeca Film Festival short film.

The Program in Spring 2009

In 2007 the Tribeca Film Institute launched Tribeca Teaches: Films in Motion, a media-based curriculum designed to enrich the educational experiences of students at schools in outlying communities. In its second year, Tribeca Teaches: Films in Motion at the Bronx Preparatory Charter School in the South Bronx doubled its curriculum and offerings. Last spring, TFI again screened Tribeca Film Festival films for an all-school mini film festival, produced a film-centric Community Day for the entire school (as well as the larger community of family and friends), and conducted a ten-week classroom workshop where more than 70 students used media to conceive of and produce four short films that explored, explained and defined stereotypes about the Bronx. Together, these four short films comprise The Stereotype Project, a celebration of the Bronx, its future and the young people who live there.

Tribeca Teaches is organized around giving students filmmaking tools with which to identify and better understand themes of identity, community and tolerance. Classroom curriculum activities include writing exercises, basic hands-on filmmaking training, and in-class visits from Tribeca Film Festival filmmakers.

The Tribeca Teaches: Films in Motion 2009 Program marks Tribeca Teaches third year at Bronx Preparatory Charter School.  Students will again have the opportunity to work with the Tribeca Teaching Artists to produce short films that reflect the lives, experiences and ides of New York City youth.
