In high school, I created video presentations to avoid speaking in front of the class. After seeing the effect my presentations had on my classmates, I was enamored by the power and influence of this visual medium. I strive to be positive and creative while moving toward my goals in life and to be an innovator in everything I do.

I am a young African American filmmaker who wants to break barriers of ignorance through film. I want to give a visual that will give young audiences the ability to reveal their inner strengths. Since I was 11, I’ve been creating and editing my own movies: narrative films, music videos and stop-action animated films. I attended two short summer filmmaking programs, given by Reelworks and BAX, and this past fall was a part of a documentary-making project run by the Central Park Conservancy

I have been making films for about 4 years, and it has been a great learning experience. I have made documentaries, fiction pieces and PSAs. This year I made a documentary on high school dropouts and I am working on a treatment for a fiction piece. My film style is sort of abstract.

I am a young, sharp-shooting filmmaker and my sometimes soft-spoken style is the shell around my over-the-top excitement about film. I love to write scenes and dialogue and using the camera up close and personal (which is how I got the nickname the “Handheld Guru”).
Maxxi Prather, 16
I would have to say what draws me to media is the power it possesses—media allows you to reach people you have never met and instill thoughts and emotions. As a filmmaker I will strive to engage and educate my audience.

While growing up in a crowded Harlem apartment I have always wondered what career would allow me to pursue my dreams and still give me the opportunity to help others, especially my parents. Ever since then film has been an interest of mine: I have worked with Downtown Community Television, NYSSSA, Adobe, and the National Generation Engaged.

I approach film from all directions at once, as a director, producer, screenwriter, editor, actor and composer. My longer works include Pedestrian Gallery, a documentary on graffiti which was screened in the Tribeca Film Festival’s Our City, My Story showcase, and Shell Shocked Shroomtrooper, a narrative film about a homeless Vietnam veteran living in Central Park.

My first film, Jewmacian, was a short documentary about me and my Jewish and Jamaican families. The film’s success thrust me into the filmmaking community, where I feel that I’ve found a home. My interest in world events has led me to become a political, social and historical documentary filmmaker.
