About TFI Youth Programs

Since 2005, TFI has utilized the power of film to help harness and direct the energy, vision and promise of New York City’s middle and high school students. Through a broad range of programming, students have the opportunity learn more about film and to use film to think about their own lives, stories, communities and careers.

Teen Filmmaker Programs are comprised of three distinct programs:

Tribeca Film Fellows program brings 20 NYC high school students to the Tribeca Film Festival (and beyond!)—giving these young filmmakers a unique behind the scenes look at the Festival, the film industry and the art of making films.

Summer Arts Institute (produced in partnership with the NYC Department of Education) is an intensive, tuition-free, 6-week filmmaking course that gives NYC public school students filmmaking training, access to state-of-the art equipment and a platform to express their ideas in new and innovative ways.

Our City, My Story, an annual celebration of excellence in New York City youth media, gives student-made work an audience during the Tribeca Film Festival. Our City, My Story aims to highlight and bring attention to the tremendous work that our city’s young filmmakers are producing.

School Programs serve New York City public school students through two programs:

Tribeca Teaches is an in-school and after-school arts education program that brings the excitement of the Tribeca Film Festival to public schools around New York City, providing students and educators with the resources to create documentary films, gain exposure to independent films and filmmakers, and to use film as an educational tool in the classroom.

The Tribeca Youth Screening Series is a monthly series of educational screenings that expose New York City students to independent films and help educators and students incorporate film-viewing into their classroom work.

Professional Development serves NYC educators through resources and workshops:

Moving Image Blueprint is a first-of-its-kind curriculum guide produced through a close collaboration between public school educators and New York City’s arts and cultural community, for which Tribeca Film Institute served as the primary cultural partner.

Professional Development Workshops are produced together with the NYC Department of Education and the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment for NYC public school teachers in support of the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts: The Moving Image.
