Alicia Keys’ Production Shingle Big Pita, Little Pita Productions has optioned the heartfelt, powerful screenplay, “Catfish,” from Tribeca All Access alum, Charisse Waugh, BPLP Partner Jeff Robinson announced today. No other producers or talent have been attached.
“Catfish” is an inspiring, modern-day story of personal triumph which centers on a strong-willed African-American woman who stands up to a powerful corporation whose greedy practices devastate her small Mississippi town. Based on a true story, “Catfish” follows one woman’s determined fight as she risks her family and her marriage, finds her true calling, and ultimately spearheads one of the biggest workers strike in U.S. history.
“When we created Big Pita, Little Pita we envisioned it as a place championing voices you don’t hear everyday,” said Keys. “Charisse has written a deeply moving script which speaks to everyone who stands up to forces trying to oppress them. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to bring this new voice and heartening story to the big screen.”
“I am so excited that Alicia Keys will be bringing this thrilling and important story to the screen,” said Waugh. “Her level of artistry and commitment to social causes will be a strong compliment to this project. I’m grateful to Tribeca All Access for making this connection possible.”
Waugh’s script came out of Tribeca All Access in 2006.
“I want to commend Alicia and everyone at Big Pita, Little Pita for optioning this important work,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Institute. “We created ‘Tribeca All Access’ with the hope of writers like Charisse connecting with companies like Big Pita, Little Pita and hope this announcement will open the doors for other production companies to follow suit and embrace the diverse array of talent in our ‘Tribeca All Access’ program.”
