Miss Navajo, a film by Billy Luther in association with World of Wonder Productions, will premiere on PBS’ Independent Lens series on November 13, 2007. Billy participated in Tribeca All Access in 2005 with the feature documentary. Told through the journey of Miss Navajo Nation contestant, Crystal Frazier, Miss Navajo explores the community’s struggle to preserve and maintain the Navajo language.
In addition to Crystal’s story, Miss Navajo interweaves the stories of the other contestants and several previous pageant winners who have served as their Nation’s female leaders and role models throughout the past half-century. Miss Navajo is a celebration of women and tradition in Dine (Navajo) culture explored through one young woman’s quest for the Miss Navajo Nation crown.
Miss Navajo is a co-production of Billy Luther and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), with funding provided by the Corporation For Public Broadcasting (CPB). The feature documentary is also an official selection of the 2007 Los Angeles Film Festival, 2007 True/False Film Festival, 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and the 2007 Traverse City Film Festival where it was awarded Michael Moore’s Special Founders Prize.
