Apply Now! The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund provides development, finishing and distribution funds to narrative film projects that dramatize compelling stories about science and technology or portray scientists, engineers and mathematics as major characters.

Apply Online
Last day to apply: August 1, 2008

Overview

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund will provide up to $140,000 in support of innovative and compelling filmmaking that explores scientific, mathematical, and technological themes and storylines, or a leading character who is a scientist, engineer, innovator or mathematician in fresh ways.

We are seeking exceptional narrative work of all genres (except science fiction or fantasy) with scientifically accurate themes or characters.

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund does not offer funding to short films or documentaries.

Past projects that have received funding for screenplay development through the TFI/Sloan Partnership include outstanding screenplays about Rosalind Franklin, Hedy Lamar, Richard Feynman, Edwin Hubble and Ramanujan, as well as many comedies.

This new fund will allow us to focus on the production end of the pipeline and to ensure that the great untold stories and wonderful characters from science and technology reach the wider movie-going audience.

Funding

The Tribeca Film Institute will award multiple annual grants ranging from $10,000 – $40,000 in 2008, totaling $140,000.

Financial support is given with the goal of helping a film at any stage progress towards completion, and is available in three categories:

  1. FINISHING FUNDS
This category will award up to $40,000 in finishing funds towards post-production, to help the filmmaker complete specific post-production processes on the film. These processes can include sound editing, negative cutting, transfer to film, printmaking costs, and other items necessary to the film’s post-production deliverables. This award is meant for films that are close to completing post-production with the goal of completing it for distribution.

  2. DISTRIBUTION FUNDS
This category awards up to $30,000 in distribution funds towards self-distribution and promotion of a completed feature length film, with an emphasis on creative and innovative distribution models.

  3. DEVELOPMENT FUNDS
This category awards up to $40,000 towards project development, to help the filmmaker commission a screenplay based on a treatment idea, option literary material for adaptation, commission a rewrite of an earlier draft, retain a casting director to attach talent to help secure funding or similar areas that will bring the project closer to production.

Projects & Eligibility

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund is seeking feature-length narrative film projects that creatively question the role of science and technology in everyday lives, and depict the lives of scientists, engineers and mathematicians in new ways.

Projects can be at any stage of development, production or post-production, and we will consider treatments, finished screenplays, works-in-progress (films that have commenced production) as well as completed films seeking distribution.

Student projects or films in the science-fiction genre will not be eligible, although prior award recipients from the Sloan Foundation’s Film School or Film Festival Programs are encouraged to apply.

Finishing Funds

  • Projects may include rough-cuts or scene-selections
  • Eligible projects should have already completed production.
  • Projects must be feature length narrative works in any genre (drama, comedy, action) that pose crucial questions about the role of science and technology in everyday lives, and depict the lives of scientists, engineers and mathematicians in fresh ways.
  • Student projects or films in the science-fiction genre will not be eligible, although prior award recipients from the Sloan Foundation’s Film School or Film Festival Programs are encouraged to apply.

Distribution Funds

  • Projects should not have screened at festivals, markets or at public events
  • Projects should have been completed after January 1, 2008

  • Student projects or films in the science-fiction genre will not be eligible, although prior award recipients from the Sloan Foundation’s Film School or Film Festival Programs are encouraged to apply.

Development Funds

Selection Process

Feature-length narrative projects are accepted through an open-call for submissions on withoutabox.com. Projects will be judged for their quality and accuracy in portraying scientific ideas.

Selections will be decided by an Award Committee comprised of notable filmmaking talent; technical experts in the fields of science and technology; and Tribeca Film Institute staff.

Grantees will be announced no later than October 1, 2008.

If you have any questions as to the eligibility of your project, please email program staff at tfisloanfund@tribecafilminstitute.org.

Ancillary Support

In addition to project funding filmmakers will be provided with ancillary support depending on level of experience and need. This will include:

  1. Mentorship, especially for filmmakers at an early stage of their career; and
  2. Film industry networking to promote finished screenplays and films and works-in-progress

Program staff will work closely with grantees to design a custom strategy for developing each project based on its unique production status.  If recommended by the Award Committee, an advisor will be assigned to grantees to provide guidance in the areas that need most development.  Advisors and recipients will initially meet to formulate a project plan and set targets and goals for the grant year, to be reviewed quarterly.  Advisors and grantees will have the opportunity to meet in person throughout the grant year to evaluate a film’s progress and advance it to the next phase.

Where appropriate, program staff may suggest goals to advance the film’s development, production or post-production, which may include re-write deadlines; one-on-one script development; strategies to promote and expose projects to key players from film financing or distribution; and guidance or assistance during the post-production process.

Projects that receive funding in one grant year will be able to re-apply for funding in the next, thereby building the feature film in stages, provided the recipient can demonstrate significant progress with the project.
