SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED

About

The TFI New Media Fund provides funding and support to non-fiction, social issue media projects which go beyond traditional screens – integrating film with content across media platforms, from video games and mobile apps to social networks and interactive websites. We’re looking for projects that activate audiences around issues of contemporary social justice and equality around the world and demonstrate the power of cross-platform storytelling and dynamic audience engagement.

Funding

Four to eight non-fiction projects will be accepted, each receiving $50,000 to $100,000 in funding. The projects must present a non-fiction story focused on social issues and include an integrated cross-platform or new media component designed to engage and activate audiences in imaginative ways. The fund will include peer support and expert mentorship for producers. Producers from the U.S. and internationally are invited to apply.

Project Funded in 2011:

18 Days in Egypt

The Tillman Story Interactive Edition

Map Your World

Say Something
Hi-- It would be helpful if you'd add the closing deadline to this info. Thanks for offering this kind of support--it's exactly what filmmakers need in this increasingly DIY world of distribution. cheers, Angela
This is a fantastic opportunity for transmedia storytellers to wield their storytelling powers and encourage discourse that can actually make tomorrow's world a better place to be. Thanks to Gamasutra editors for bringing it to my attention.
Angela, The closing deadline for submissions will be May 25th, 2011.

Why aren't fiction projects included? Can they not meet your goals as strongly as non-fiction?

This is a wonderful opportunity - using nonfiction media to promote a creative and artistic interpretation of social issues is a very effective way of communicating to audiences that might not otherwise ever notice. Ford did not accept the bailout and is not resting on its laurels - a real American car company.

....about submitting some nice machinima doc to this!
Media monitoring in Kenya has been tried and experimented but the media presents one of the most uphill tasks in uniting the over 42 tribes of Kenya with almost every tribe having its own vernacular media outlet. PeaceNet Kenya, Peace building and conflict management organisation in Kenya conducted a media monitoring for vernacular Radio stations in Kenya in the run up 2010 constitutional referendum. The results was the coming up of UWIANO Platform for Peace which sought the involvement of all Kenyans in ensuring a peaceful referendum. One aspect of the UWIANO Platform for Peace that never worked is the collection and uploading of video clips on media outlets be it websites and blogs. This is a component that we wish to take up in the run to the 2012 elections. Kindly consider the supporting us in this not just finacially but also with the expertice as we have our media monitors across the country who can capture picutres and video clips but which needed to have been compiled into a film to teach Kenyans on the need for Peace during before and after electioneering periods. This then could be shared on the NEW media where the Kenyan youth are very alive in the hope that many with be influenced into embracing peaceful coexistence and shun violence. On top of that hate messages, engraining of ethnic stereotypes has been a major challenge with the new media. How good it could be if this is taken up by the TFI to foster a culture of tolerance amongst the Kenyan tribes. We will be sending you our proposal soon. Thanks and God bless TFI.
I have been all over the web site and do not find actual submission guidelines - -what materials you want to see, format, points to address, how and where to send, etc. Will all this be available starting on April 4? Thank you. This site has ignited our group to some fevered discussion!
I'm thrilled that this fund has ignited some fevered discussion! Full submission guidelines will be online next week. If you have any questions at all in the meantime please email: newmediafund@tribecafilminstitute.org Ingrid New Media Consultant - TFI New Media Fund
Thanks for creating this innovative approach to funding social documentaries. With social media tools, soc docs can now educate the public throughout the film-making process, not just when the film releases. But that can take time and resources, and it is great that you are supporting this trend.
