The 2009 Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund supported film ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE, one of the most harrowing and compelling personal documentaries of our time, is coming to theaters this summer via specialty distributor International Film Circuit.
A unique collaboration between British filmmaker, Rob Lemkin, and Cambodian journalist, Thet Sambath, ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE exposes for the first time the truth about the Cambodian Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge who were behind that country’s horrific genocide.
ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE will open in New York City at the Quad Cinema on July 30, followed by an August date in Los Angeles and a national rollout into the fall.
The film has won more than a dozen top documentary festival awards, including a World Jury Special Prize at Sundance, the Grand Jury Award at Full Frame, and the Nestor Almendros Prize for Courage in Filmmaking at the upcoming Human Rights Watch Film Festival. ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE is a riveting film that takes audiences as close to witnessing evil as they are ever likely to get. It is also a personal journey into the heart of darkness by Thet Sambath, whose family was wiped out on the killing fields, but whose patience and discipline elicits unprecedented on-camera confessions from perpetrators at all levels of the Khmer Rouge hierarchy.
“This is a landmark work of investigative journalism that even the Cambodian courts are trying to get their hands on,” notes Wendy Lidell, president of International Film Circuit, “American audiences will be stunned.” On a more personal note, Lemkin adds, “I see Sambath as a man trying to make sense of the nightmare of his childhood. When he finally understands the genocide, as he says he does, he is achieving inner peace and coherence by being able to situate his personal loss in the wider sweep of history.”
International Film Circuit has been releasing independent films in the US since 1987. The company’s documentary releases have included Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, The Devil Came on Horseback, and Academy-Award nominated Darwin’s Nightmare.
ROB LEMKIN is the founder and director of Old Street Films. He has produced and directed over 50 documentaries for BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Sky and The History Channel, including numerous award winners. THET SAMBATH is a senior reporter with the Phnom Penh Post, Cambodia’s premier English-language newspaper. He is widely regarded as one of Cambodia’s best investigative reporters and his stories have been syndicated all over the world.
